CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPY

April 6, 2017 By Andrew Grant

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural and pleasant state of the human mind, involving focused attention and concentration. We can experience this “trance-like” state in everyday living, for example: becoming totally involved watching TV or driving on a familiar route where you do not quite remember part of the journey, but know that you arrived their safely- almost in “auto-pilot”. It is often likened to daydreaming, reading an absorbing book, noticing a smell or hearing a song which takes you back in time reminding you of an event which has been stored deep down in your memory.

It is a technique that is well utilised by sports people and other high performing corporate individuals to achieve a relaxed state of mind where one can then truly focus on an idea, an aspect of one’s life, a dilemma or a challenge.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Clinical Hypnotherapy is using hypnosis to augment other traditional approaches. During hypnosis, the body and conscious mind are in a relaxed, natural state, while the subconscious mind remains awake and receptive to suggestion. Hypnotic suggestions bypass the intellectual mind, called the “conscious” mind, and zero in on the subconscious mind. Providing a new suggestion is within the bounds of a person’s belief-system and moral orientation, the subconscious mind accepts it literally as a new reality. The ability to re-program emotional attitudes and reactions is a latent talent within every human being. Hypnosis is the most functional and reasonable way to build new behaviours, create new patterns and find alternate ways of dealing with situations, thereby enforcing positive changed and restoring well-being of mind and body.

Will I lose control?

Put very simply, clinical hypnosis is not something that is done to you, rather with you. Clients remain in complete control and maintain a level of awareness of their surroundings just as one would in any situation that they might find themselves daydreaming only to be, for example, stirred should they be required to attend to anything outside of their focussed attention.  When clients are in the hands of trained and accredited professionals they are managed with the utmost of ethical standards and practices that guide approaches and techniques.
